Osahito MAKIYAMA, Editor & Publisher |

Upon AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual
Property) holding its World Conference in Tokyo, in 1966 -- the first time
for this event to be held in Asia -- when Japan was still second to the
U.S. in terms of top ranking in the world for patent applications, there
was much call for intellectual property-related information to be provided
from Japan. |
|
|
|
In 1970, the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and AIPPI Japan Chapter jointly
edited the publication "Famous Trademarks in Japan" for which
I, Osahito Makiyama, was Editorial Coordinator. In this capacity, I visited
foreign-affiliated firms and embassies located in Tokyo in addition to
patent & law firms around Japan, whereupon "Is there no publication
in English which offers commentary as to IP-related laws and information
concerning crucial court disputes involving patents?" became the stock
phrase awaiting me everywhere I visited. |

From 1971, in order to respond to the aforementioned need expressed by
those at home and abroad for a medium specializing in intellectual property,
"Patents & Licensing" was launched as an information service avenue to the foreign readership
from Japan, with cooperation provided by JPO as well as AIPPI and, in the
form of bulk publication purchases and advertisements, with support from
leading patent law firms in Japan. Our company has continued publishing
in the intellectual property field for more than four decades as a "long-awaited
journal" which has been of great use to many.
